BOSTON -- Aroldis Chapman is out as the New York Yankees' closer.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said before Saturday night's game with the Boston Red Sox that the hard-throwing lefty, who gave up two runs in a non-save appearance in Friday's 9-6 loss to Boston, is being taken out of that role to work through some location issues.
Chapman will be used "at any point" for now, Girardi said, though he stopped short of naming his replacement. Instead, Dellin Betances and David Robertson will be used based on the situation, to allow flexibility, Girardi said.
Girardi emphasized this change could be short-lived -- depending upon how Chapman responds to it -- and that he hopes moving him around will help him get things back on track.
"When we get him going like I believe he will get going, there's a good chance I'll put him back in that closer's role and manipulate the other three guys," Girardi said.
"He's been scuffling for the last 10 days, two weeks," Girardi said. "And I just thought for us to get him on track maybe the best way would be to move him around a little bit until he gets going."
Chapman has given up at least two runs in each of his past three outings, including a 3-2 loss against Boston earlier this week.
Girardi said an injury has been ruled out as a culprit for Chapman's recent issues.
"We've looked at everything," Girardi said. "And I really think it comes down to his location. He's been up in the zone more."
Girardi said Chapman told him he was willing to do "whatever it takes" for the team to win.
"He knows that he needs to get back on track and that he's scuffled a little bit," Girardi said. "But he said, 'I'm willing to do anything. I just want to win.'"

Chapman entered Sunday's game in the 6th inning.

It's the first time he's appeared in a game that early since Sept. 23, 2011

Congrats on save 250

This wasn't the cleanest save but overall Chapman has had a great start to the season. The veteran reliever now has a 1.74 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 32:6 K:BB through 20 2/3 innings and has converted 14-of-15 save chances this year.

Closer is such an over-rated concept, a closer is just one of 13 pitchers on a typical MLB roster, use whichever pitcher best fits the game circumstances !

You're right. A closer comes in with a lead. Sometimes as much as a three run lead. The most overrated Stat in sports.

Show me a successful baseball team that doesn't have a dominant closer. It's the most important position on the team the way pitchers are used today.

most dominate player in baseball

Based on what ?

I'm not so sure I even want him pitching the 9th in a playoff game with a 1 run lead, but in the end I'd reluctantly give him the pelota

Yankees pitcher Aroldis Chapman said he would attend their mandatory workout if he definitely was going to be on their postseason roster.
The Yankees could not give him that assurance.
Chapman stayed home in Miami.
The Yankees told him to stay there.
His Yankee career is over.
